LIFE, Music Break

The Pearl Mic is Back

So, during my year-long hiatus from my little space on the web, I had time to think about what I wanted as a woman and as a media professional. After fasting from music and working a couple of marketing jobs, I realized that I REALLY enjoy writing and discussing music, film, food, and style. Lighthearted fun content that brings a smile to my readers’ faces. I like curating content that promotes creativity. With that said, I’ll be updating this blog with fresh content. It may take me some time to get a schedule going, but it’s going to happen.

Also, I am excited to announce that I helped launch a new music venture called MUSIK !D TV!

MUSIK !D TV is for the aspiring and independent musician. We are pulling back the veil of the music industry for the aspiring and independent musician. Our videos and blogs will provide transparent information about the business models for music stores or what we would now call streaming services. You will also read about current events in the market that would affect the music economy and the livelihood of aspiring musicians.
Stay tuned!

Watch: Official Trailer of the Amy Winehouse Documentary, ‘Amy’

If you are a Pearl Mic’er, then you are familiar with how I feel about Amy Winehouse’s untimely death, in this blog post. At 27 years old she was at the prime of her career that most people only dream about, but the wrong kind of love, too much drugs, and the pressures of the industry turned her into someone her family no longer recognized. Though we are all aware of her tragic ending, the documentary Amy hopes to dispel some misconceptions of the Grammy award-winning singer. From her humble beginnings to her controversial ending, viewers will get to see an up-close look at the woman underneath the signature black beehive and wing-tip eyeliner. Here’s a sneak peek of the documentary:

Watch Emily King’s Colorful New Video “The Animals”

Emily King - The Animals - The Pearl Mic
“Don’t fear.”

We’ve all heard breakup songs or the I-don’t want-to-get-hurt-again songs that left us feeling more depressed after listening to them. Yet, here is Emily King, a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, who somehow makes that I-don’t want-to-get-hurt-again song triumphant with “The Animals”. Upon the second listen (OK, maybe it was the third, fourth, or fifth time, but who is counting?), the listener will discover that she is also talking about not feeding your fears too. Check out the cool, chromatic video:

“The Animals” is from Emily’s forthcoming album, The Switch, out on June 26th

Cool Find: Plart! Original Works of Art on a Dinner Plate

You know that question, if you could invite five people to dinner – dead or alive – who would it be? Well, artist, Jacqueline Poirier aka The Crazy Plate Lady sort of makes that possible. The Toronto-based artist can paint anyone or anything on a white charger plate. You can bring Rhianna, Al Pacino, Ryan Gosling, Martha Stewart, and Morgan Freeman (imagine that dinner party!) to your table with no fuss; or dazzle your dinner table with landscapes or yummy-looking dishes. Her paintings are displayed in the Ritz-Carlton Toronto’s TOCA dining room where she is the resident artist.

To many burgeoning artists, her career launch reads like a fairytale. Four years ago she was hired as a waiter by the Ritz-Carlton Toronto. After Jacqueline had competed in an art competition at the hotel, her intricate free-hand paintings got her manager’s attention. He then requested for her to create custom designs on a few plates.

“The painted plates ended up looking really nice on the tables, so I just went with it! I received really great feedback from guests at the restaurant,” she shared in an interview. “I ended up painting over 120 plates in about two months (all unique and completely different images). They’re now a signature part of TOCA restaurant. From TOCA, I have been able to start up my own “Plart” business, creating custom designed plates for all sorts of occasions.”

Check out her one-of-a-kind pieces at or the TOCA restaurant.

Lianne La Havas is ‘Unstoppable’ in New Video

“…Let’s be at peace, we’ll fly/Our hearts collide/Can’t escape from the magnetic side.”

Lianne La Havas let down her bun and is having way too much fun in the latest visual for her popular new single, ‘Unstoppable’, from her forthcoming album Blood.

The smooth R&B track matches the video – it’s simple, delicate, and lovely. Lianne shows fans her sleek and unique dance moves as she spins and twirls in stylish navy jumpsuits (by the way, we’re loving the gold and navy one. Please and thank you!). Of course, as curly girls ourselves, we couldn’t help but stare at her admirable dark curls spilling across her face. OK, we’ll stop gushing, so you can check out the loveliness:

Blood is out July 31st. Pre-order now and get ‘Unstoppable’:
